Changes to print queues with the move of the User Area
Introduction
At the moment there are three printers in the Cockcroft 3 User Area
accessible via the Computing Service's Unix systems (the C.U.S., Thor
and Hermes). Two of these are very old Xerox printers and the other
is an HP LaserJet 4. The new Phoenix User Area will be equipped
with a HP LaserJet 5. This document describes the changes in the
printer queues corresponding to the change in printers.
At the moment the following queues exist:
cs_co3_lj
The LaserJet 4. Plain text input is rendered in 12pt Courier font
on a portrait page. All other input types (including PostScript)
include their orientation (and potentially font information) in the
document. Only the 35 level one PostScript fonts are available.
cs_co3_xer2c
, cs_co3_xer3c
The two Xeroxes in "Portrait Courier" mode. Plain text
input is rendered in 12pt Courier font on a portrait page. All other
input types (including PostScript) include their orientation (and
potentially font information) in the document. Level two PostScript
is not understood.
cs_co3_xer2u
, cs_co3_xer3u
The two Xeroxes in "Upright" mode. Plain text input is
rendered in a small Xerox-specific font on a portrait page. All other
input types (including PostScript) include their orientation (and
potentially font information) in the document. Level two PostScript
is not understood.
cs_co3_xer2l
, cs_co3_xer3l
The two Xeroxes in "Landscape" mode. Plain text input is
rendered in a small Xerox-specific font on a landscape page. All
other input types (including PostScript) include their orientation
(and potentially font information) in the document. Level two
PostScript is not understood.
cs_co3_xer2h
, cs_co3_xer3h
These queues were designed to accept HPGL input. Nobody has used
them during 1998 so they are being dropped in the transfer.
PostScript print jobs
Whatever queue was used previously for PostScript printing, the
queue cs_phxua_lj
should be used to print in the new
Phoenix User Area. The new printer should accept all PostScript jobs
previously accepted by any of the printers in the old Cockcroft 3
User Area and will accept level two PostScript commands. The set of
fonts on the new printer (an HP LaserJet 5M) is the same as the
set of 35 level one fonts as on the Cockcroft 3
LaserJet 4.

Plain text print jobs
Sending a plain text print job to cs_phxua_lj
will
result in a 12pt Courier font, portrait mode output. To get landscape
mode, users should use the alternate queue name
cs_phxua_ljl
. Users seeking tighter control of their
output (choice of font family or size, for example) should investigate
ASCII-to-PostScript converters and use one of them to convert their
text before printing. Users of the C.U.S. should investigate
psf
. Users of Thor should investigate psf
on hammer
or mpage
on belt
and
gloves
. Users of Hermes have no options for converting
plain text data to PostScript without transferring it off-system.
Other format print jobs
All other accepted formats should contain their own font and
orientation directives. These should be sent to
cs_phxua_lj
.
